Conducting a Job Search
The very first step in a job search is to write an outstanding resume. Prepare a resume during your freshman year. Then look for summer internships during the fall of your sophomore and junior years. Remember that summer internships often lead to job offers.
Your search for the first position as a college graduate should begin no later than the fall of your senior year. ECSU offers many opportunities for making contacts.
Career Planning and Placement organizes a job fair in the fall. Also student clubs often sponsor job fairs at conferences. Another opportunity to make contacts is during the annual Black Executives Exchange Program (BEEP).
Corporations often do not advertise entry-level positions because they expect students to show initiative. Use search engines to find homepages of major corporations. Often you can even e-mail your resume.
Seniors should send out several cover letters/resumes each week asking for interviews. Black Collegian Magazine (either on-line or in print) is an excellent source of names and addresses.
Seniors should look for a position in the government during the spring. Governments are legally required to advertise positions. Click on Links (to the left) to search for positions with local, state, or the federal government.
