Center for Entrepreneurship

ECSU established the Center for Entrepreneurship in January 2001. The Center supports the goals of the University by providing a challenging and supportive environment to prepare students for knowledgeable, responsible participation and leadership in society. The Walter R. Davis School of Business and Economics houses the Center.

The US Department of Education granted funds to employee a part-time staff, and world-renowned money manager Tom Marsico of Denver, Colorado, contributed $50,000 to support the Center. The largest gift to date, $77,281, was granted by the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership of Kansas City, Missouri, and a second-year grant of $38,640 was approved by the Kauffman Center in February, 2002. Other grant applications are expected.

The Center helps students gain "real world" experiences while pursing their undergraduate studies. The Center's mission includes: (1) infusing entrepreneurial issues into traditional academic courses in a range of disciplines, (2) developing interdisciplinary courses and a visiting lecture series on entrepreneurial topics, (3) providing opportunities for students and faculty to take education outside the classroom and into the workplace, and (4) increasing the interaction between the University, community, and successful entrepreneurs.

The Center sponsored its first entrepreneurial internships in the summer of 2001; nine students worked from twelve to fourteen weeks with an entrepreneurial enterprise. Six students completed internships in the Fall 2001 semester and another six won internships for the Spring 2002 semester. Additional internships will be competitively available for the summer of 2002 and afterward. Student entrepreneurial interns are paid $10 per hour and earn three credit hours toward graduation (BUAD-490). The Center also places students in non-entrepreneurial unpaid internships for course credit.
