NEW STUDENTS

All freshmen who enter the University with an expressed goal of pursuing a degree are assigned to the Division. Students who indicate a major interest are advised by a faculty advisor in the academic department in which the major is offered. Advisors in the division primarily advise students who are undecided about a major.

The advisors are responsible for assisting students in completing their general education requirements. Students enrolled in the Evening/Weekend Program are also assigned to an advisor who has the same responsibility.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer students, upon enrollment at the University, have their transcripts from other college and universities evaluated by the Office of Admissions. A Record of Transfer Credit is sent to the Division for evaluation.

The transfer student is initially advised by the coordinator of academic advisement in the division who has the responsibility of evaluating the courses transferred to determine which courses can be used in fulfilling general education requirements. After the coordinator informs the student of the general education requirements, the student is assigned to an advisor in the major department offering the major he/she wishes to pursue.

ALL STUDENTS

Advisors will make every attempt to give effective guidance to students in academic matters and to assist students in solving personal problems. Advisors within the Division will also consult with instructors concerning academic behavior and the performance level of the students, and review periodically with students their total learning experiences.

Each academic advisor is trained in the areas of appropriate course requirements for the Division of General Studies. The advisor is there also to counsel students who are experiencing

stressful situations in the learning process and takes primary responsibility for securing support needed for students with known educational deficits.

The advisor is a FRIEND and will assist students with any concerns. Areas of academic concern include choice of courses, the Freshman Testing Program, placement in developmental courses, courses difficulties, and other areas involving academic and career decision-making. The student should begin with the academic advisor in solving all academic problems and continue to the Division's Chairperson as needed.

Academic advisors are specifically trained in designing schedules which will move the student to the successful completion of general education requirements by the end of the sophomore year. When a student is within six hours of completing all core courses required by the Division, the student is transferred to a department which offers the major of his choice. These six hours cannot include a Freshman English course or the three hours of required mathematics (College Algebra).
