NE North Carolina Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Herbarium

What is a herbarium? A herbarium is a collection of dried specimens catalogued and stored for examination and other studies.

The purpose of the ECSU SAV Herbarium is for the collection, preservation, curation, and study of species of submerged aquatic vegetation found within the waters of northeastern North Carolina, including Currituck Sound and Albemarle Sound and the rivers that flow into these sounds. Collected samples are dried, mounted, archived, and sampled for various biochemical analyses, particularly genetic profiles of naturally occurring SAV. Herbarium specimens are available for study in person or through this web site. Samples of specimens are available to scientists for research studies upon request and depending upon availability.
