A Career in Geology

Geology is an area with high salary potential and offers unprecedented education and career opportunities for everyone. However, minority participation is still very low.

Our alumni, from the Department of Geological, Environmental, and Marine Sciences at Elizabeth City State University, are successfully employed in oil companies (Exxon, Ashland Oil, Amoco, and other companies), at federal agencies (U.S. Geological Survey, National Imagery and Mapping Agency), state agencies, and private organizations. There is an acute shortage of teachers, especially science and math teachers, and some of our graduates are teaching science and math courses in public schools. A few have chosen to continue their professional education by going to graduate school and earn their Master of Science degree.

The starting salary for students who do well academically range from $21,000 in the federal government to about $30,000 in private industry.

Summer employment, internships and cooperative programs under various federal agencies are also available for our majors. These programs offer opportunities for students to learn valuable work experience, earn money, and at the same time, complete their education. After graduation, the sponsoring agency place them at the top of their hiring list.

The Department of Geological, Environmental, and Marine Sciences at Elizabeth City State University has been recognized as having one of the best undergraduate programs in geology.
