The Environmental Research lab was started in 1995  as part of the Department of Geosciences.  The lab,
which is completely interdisciplinary was created for the purpose of conducting Environmental Research
at Elizabeth City State University. The research lab is completely funded by the Title III Program.
The lab is designed to offer students an opportunity to receive hands on training and creating, developing,
and carrying out research projects. This lab also focuses on preparing the student researchers for graduate
school programs and the environmental work force.

The lab specializes in aquatic environments and public concerns relating to water supply and waste water.
With the projection of additional funding students will be able to carry out a greater variety of research
activities.

The labs are staffed by  student researchers who are awarded a very competitive stipend to support their
research activities. Students are required to submit a final project report which akin to an undergraduate thesis.
Many of the research projects have benefited several state agencies and other public groups.
