GEMS Club (Geological,Environmental,and Marine Sciences) Elizabeth City State University The Geological, Environmental, and Marine Sciences (GEMS) Club is an organization open to all students of ECSU who are interested in the earth and the environment around them.  The main emphasis of the club is to educate students and the community about the environment.  The GEMS Club has undergone recent changes in Fall 1998.  The club has increased its membership, increased its budget and increased activities. Meetings are held every other Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Jenkins Science Center, Room 325.  Events sponsored by the club include a field trip each semester to a location of geological interest, the annual homecoming Mr. and Ms. GEMS Club award, social functions such as movie night, and bowling, as well as fundraisers.     Geoscience Field Trip to Chimney Rock Park near Asheville, NC, Fall of 1998

SPRING, 2005 Field Trip:

• Fun Junktion, Elizabeth City, March 14.  Dr. Kathleen Fischer's MAS 333 Wetland and Ocean Chemistry sampled and analyzed water in the fishing pond for water quality parameters.  Participating students include Chris Baker, Stephanie Kudyba, Cleantha Samuel, Trecia Taft, Shakira Turner, and Robert Woodard
• NOAA NOS Center for Coasta Fisheries and Habitat Research, Beaufort, North Carolina, March 25.  Dr. Kathleen Fischer, Ms. Elizabeth Noble, and students Shanna Chambliss and Rachel Boyce ampled marsh sediments for grain size and organic carbon analysis for NOAA Lab.   These studies examined sediment accumulation in salt marshes and is part of a NOAA Science-Based Citizen Monitoring of a Restored Salt Marsh in North Carolina.

• Elkins, West Virginia Geological Field Trip, April 8-10.  Drs. Thomas Rossbach and Lloyd Mitchell will take their Historical Geology, Paleontology, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Geomorphology students on a weekend field trip studying Devonian age rocks of West Virginia.  The main focus of the trip is a series of new road cuts near Elkins which expose rocks that have yet to be officially mapped.  Students will have an opportunity to examine the stratigraphy as well as collect fossils of many kinds marine animals, including brachipods, pelecypods, and corals.  Shorter stops are planned at Durbin, WV to collect Devonian age plant fossils; at Huttonsville, WV to view rocks which represent the entire Devonian Catskill delta complex; and at Dailey, WV where Paleozoic rocks have been intensely folded, affording an opportunity to map several types of geologic structures.

•   Audubon Pine Island Sanctuary Kayak Eco-Tour (tentative date:  October 6)

•   Dixie Caverns and the Geology of the Salem-Roanoke Area, Virginia (tentative dates:  November 10 - 11)

SPRING, 2002 Field Trips:

•   United State Geological Survey and Museum of Natural History (tentative dates:  April 13 - 14)

 

FALL, 2000 Field Trips:

• Geology of Medoc Mountain State Park, North Carolina, (tentative date is October 7, 2000)

• Geological field trip: sedimentology, stratigraphy, and paleontology of Kates Mountain, West Virginia (tentative dates are November 10 - 12, 2000)

• Geology of Pilot Mountain and Mount Airy, North Carolina (tentative date: April 7-8, 2001)

FALL, 1999 Field Trips:

• Washington, D.C. trip - Rock & Mineral Section in the Smithsonian & a visit to the US Geological Survey (October 22-23, 1999)

• Geology field trip for Sed/Paleo students in Virginia and and West Virginia (November 12-14, 1999)

• Luray Caverns (March 31 - April 1, 2000)
