I truly enjoyed my trip to the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC.  We saw many different ways our Government is working with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure our health by cleaning groundwater that was contaminated many years ago.  There are many different types of chemicals that have been "accidentally" released into our water and air from sources which we use to make our lives better.

For example, when water comes into contact with coal, the pyrite that is in the coal reacts and forms sulphiric acid which is released back into the groundwater.  This is a very acidic mixture is destructive to the natural habitat.  I hope to return to the SRS in the near future hopefully as a researcher.
