This trip to Aiken, South Carolina has been a very educating experience for me. I have not only had fun, I have also learned plenty of new things. At the Savannah River Site we saw a variety of experiments that the staff were performing to help find solutions to environmental problems.
One experiment in particular dealt with a water basin and a simulated wetlands. The purpose was to find a way to remove some, if not all, of the acidity and iron from the water. The experiment has been successful. While we were there we measured in influent water source at a pH of 4 while the effluent had a pH of 7.8. While also saw the affect of Pyrite (Fools Gold) on water, the presenter dropped the mineral in a beaker of neutral water and the pH rapidly dropped to 4.
We also listened to some very interesting and informative lectures. I may even consider enrolling in their undergraduate research program. I believe it would open up a lot of opportunities for me.
