Upward Bound is a college-based program of rigorous academic instruction, individual tutoring, and counseling for low-income, dis-advantaged high school students, most of whom are the first generation of their families to enter and successfully complete post-secondary education.
The selection of students is based on the recommendation of teachers, counselors, and others who are are well acquainted with them.
During the summer, Upward Bound students live on the campus for six weeks and are involved in an intensive academic study program with an emphasis on composition and literature, reading, mathematics, a science course with a lab, and a foreign language. The students begin a battery of tests to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Afterwards, an individualized educational program is designed for each student. Individual and group counseling is also an important element of the program.
During the academic year, Upward Bound students receive supplemental academic instruction, tutoring, and counseling after school and on Saturdays. The academic year is designed specifically to guide students through their required college preparation courses.
