About ECSU

Elizabeth City State University values the people who grace our campus, our place in our part of the world, the progress of the people we touch and the events we can influence, and the programs we offer that provide unique benefits and rewards. And it is in these four areas, we have a story to tell:

Pride in Our People.

We began as a ‘normal school’, an institution created to educate teachers. We still produce quality teachers for NC and elsewhere, but we also educate students for many other fields--- from the sciences to the arts. Today, our graduates constitute 64% elementary and 38% secondary teachers for our geographic area. Most importantly, all students who are successful with Praxis II are employed within 6 months after receiving their teacher’s license. Many of our teacher education graduates have been honored with teacher of the year and principal of the year awards locally and statewide.

Our students routinely earn national, regional, and state recognition for their academic achievements... National Criminal Justice Honor Society, HBCU All Stars (White House Initiative), UNCF/Merck Initiative Awards, National Biological Honor Society, National Social Work Honor Society, Nation Business Honor Society, National Society in Psychology, International English Honor Society, National Science Foundation, and more.

Our students have been accepted into prestigious graduate programs at institutions such as Columbia University, Campbell University, University of Haifa, Israel, University of Maryland College Park, Howard University, Trinity Washington University, among others.

Our faculty continues to engage in significant research and scholarships.Over the past five years, faculty and staff have generated 413 proposals, $172,166,170 in submissions and received 275 awards that total $62,914,868 in federal, state, and private award to support academic research, classroom instructions, and community engagement, by providing jobs and incremental spending from grant salaries. That support also attracts industry partners and results in significant economic benefits for North Carolina.

Our faculty has earned advanced degrees from places like Columbia University, Duke University, NYU, Vanderbilt University, University of California, Michigan, Virginia Tech, and Texas, among others.

Our alumni continue make significant contributions to society. More than 19,000 graduates who graced the halls of ECSU have helped shape the future of the region, state, and nation. They have carried ECSU’s mission of teaching, research, and community engagement to every corner of the globe. Pride in Place.

We are a force for growth for northeastern North Carolina, bringing education, cultural events, jobs, and grants to a part of the state that has been historically underdeveloped. ECSU is a 200-acre rural campus situated on 862 acres in the historical Albemarle area. Located in picturesque Elizabeth City and less than an hour from North Carolina’s famous Outer Banks and Virginia’s Hampton Road metropolitan region, ECSU has been providing quality education for northeastern North Carolinians since 1891. We started teaching graduates how to be great teachers, and we still do that. And more...

  • We are the third largest employer in the region. Based on recent economic studies, ECSU’s economic impact on local community included: $118 million in output sales, $83 million in value added (gross regional product), and $59 million in labor income.
  • ECSU is the smallest university in the UNC system, but we are proud of our size because we provide a family atmosphere, a personal touch-a caring, student-centered environment with small class sizes, a low student to teacher ratio, and great internship, leadership, and research opportunities.
  • We partner with the city of Elizabeth City to improve lives in the area through internships, grants, and public outreach.
  • ECSU is within close proximity to U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps facilities.

Pride in Progress.

We’re proud of our past, but realize that what happens next --- how we improve --- is even more important, and it is in that future we have great hope.

Using two ECSU planes --- Viking 1 & 2 --- and partnering with the local US Coast Guard air traffic controllers, ECSU students can graduate with real hours at the controls of a licensed plane flying in real airspace.
