Department of History & Political Science
Welcome to the Department of History & Political Science at Elizabeth City State University!
The Department of History & Political Science is located in Moore Hall. One of the older buildings on campus, Moore Hall is listed on the National Historic Registry. Nonetheless, the department is on the cutting edge of technology, with SMART technology in all classes in Moore Hall, as well as several instructors who teach online courses and who employ state-of-the-art educational software like the ECHO360 Lecture Capture.
The department currently has two degree granting programs: a BA in History and a BA in Political Science. History majors interested in teaching at the secondary level can acquire a minor in Secondary Education. Additionally, people who have already acquired a bachelor degree can take classes toward licensure in Secondary Social Studies. Additional minors available through the department include American History, Black Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Geography, Global Studies and Pre-Law.
The department encourages students to apply the content they learn in their classes. To accomplish this, internships are available for Political Science and History majors. The department is also supportive of Service Learning projects and activities. In addition to individual class opportunities to do service learning activities, the department has a History/Political Science/Geography Club that provides service activities within the department, as well as community service activities.
The newest addition to the department offerings is a stand-alone graduate level course, HIST 501 Readings in Early America. Designed to help meet graduate course requirements for MA degrees in History, this course was designed to help assist area Secondary Social Studies teachers prepare for teaching the new NCDPI mandate of two terms of American History. The course will be offered for the first time this year, Summer 2012, as an online course.
The newest addition to the departmental staff is Nengher N. Vang, Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota of Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Vang also brings his expertise in Religious Studies
(department minor) with his Masters in Theology (Iliff School of Theology, Denver,
