Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences

The Department confers Baccalaureate degrees in the following disciplines:
- Sociology (B.A.),
- Social Work (BSW),
- Criminal Justice (B.S.),
- History (B.A.) and
- Political Science (B.A.).
Additionally, the Department provides students with an opportunity to minor in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice, Gerontology and Sociology, Global Studies, Geography, Black Studies, Political Science and American History (18-24 semester credit hours are needed for a minor). Plans are in process in the department will offer an Online Certificate in Criminal Justice Program (click here for more information). The Social Work Program received its accreditation status in June 2007 from the Council on Social Work Education and was reaffirmed in 2013.
The principal objective of the Department is the academic and social preparation of undergraduate students. This preparation provides our students with a liberal arts education while preparing them to enter the work force, graduate and professional schools.

CSWE's Commission on Accreditation (COA) is responsible for developing accreditation standards that define competent preparation and ensuring that social work programs meet them. In accordance with the requirements of CSWE's recognition body, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation (OSWA) administers a multistep accreditation process that involves program self-studies, site visits, and COA reviews.
