Summer Transportation Institute

Minorities and women, long affected by discrimination in air transportation as well as many other fields, are now finding opportunities in aviation that remained largely out of reach. Many employers are recruiting people with at least a bachelor's degree. Minority populations (i.e., African American and Hispanic) generally have a higher high school dropout rate than their white counterparts in the United States. This fact lessens the pool of candidates that could potentially obtain the level of education necessary for high-level positions in the transportation industry. Given the obstacles to increasing the number of minorities and women in transportation, it is imperative that both these groups obtain training and become familiar with this field at an early stage in their career development. The STI program at Elizabeth City State University is unique in that it introduces minorities, disadvantaged and women to careers in transportation through a balanced mix of theory, hands-on activities, field trips, and guest seminars/lectures.
