Academics

As northeastern North Carolina's four-year institution of higher education, Elizabeth City State University has been an important academic and cultural center for the region. A constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system, ECSU is committed to fulfilling our mission of serving as a valuable resource for building the state's intellectual capital through teaching, research and community outreach.

We are proud of our strong academic programs. ECSU offers 37 baccalaureate degrees and four master's degrees in four academic schools - Arts & Humanities; Business and Economics; Education and Psychology; and Mathematics, Science and Technology. The university has academic programs that appeal to various interests and fields of study, including the honors program, military science, study abroad, Viking Fellows for education majors, and our signature programs - aviation and pharmacy.

Our students are exposed to exciting research opportunities that extend their learning beyond textbooks and classrooms. Learning is enhanced by innovative instructional and informational technology. Students may also take advantage of specialized academic support programs. Several of our academic and research initiatives such as the Drug Information Center afford students with opportunities for community service.

The university provides an academically rigorous, stimulating learning environment and a faculty committed to the education of each student. ECSU ranked second among Top Public Baccalaureate Colleges in the South and 11th among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the 2010 "America's Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report.
