BS in Birth - Kindergarten

Learning Outcomes and Assessment

The mission of the Birth through Kindergarten program is to prepare teachers and leaders for the early childhood profession. The focus of the program is the acquirement of knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for effective practice in research, teaching, and service in the early childhood profession. Areas addressed include transition services for young children and families, school readiness, at-risk and special needs populations, and developmentally appropriate practices for children ages birth through five, with and without disabilities.

Outcome 1-Content Knowledge
Students will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of typical as well as atypical patterns of child development through the completion of a comparative ecological case study.

Outcome 2 - Pedagogical Knowledge: Unit Plan
Students will be able to apply and synthesize principles of student learning, early childhood education content, cultural contexts, learner differences, instructional strategies, and data-based assessment to develop integrated and differentiated unit plans.

Outcome 3-Professional Knowledge: Leadership
Students will be able to synthesize program learning to create a culminating leadership project to implement in a Birth-Kindergarten setting that includes collaborating, planning, implementing, evaluating, and reflecting upon a school improvement project that includes families and communities.

Outcome 5-Pedagogical Skills
Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in classroom teaching as measured by the indicators on the Certificate of Teaching Capacity.

Outcome 6-Positive Impact on Student Learning
Students will be able to use various methods of assessment to select and implement instructional strategies and activities that positively impact student learning.
