Learning Outcomes and Assessment

The Criminal Justice Program's mission is to offer a quality, interdisciplinary curriculum to prepare graduates for careers in criminal justice and/or to provide them with the knowledge base needed for admittance into advanced degree programs. This mission will be accomplished in an environment that values diversity, fosters respect, and aligns with the missions of the Department of Criminal Justice, Sociology and Social Work; the School of Arts and Humanities, and Elizabeth City State University.

Outcome 1: CJS Fundamental Principles
Students will be able to identify, and distinguish between, the fundamental principles that have shaped the American Criminal Justice System (CJS) over time.

Outcome 2: Criminological Theory Competence
Students will be able to identify, and distinguish between, the major criminological/criminal justice theories and demonstrate how they are applied in criminal justice organizations as well as in legal and social institutions.

Outcome 3: Criminal Justice System Components
Students will be able to explain how each of the three major components of the criminal justice system (i.e., policing, courts, and corrections) separately, and in concert, attempts to create a safer society.

Outcome 4: Juvenile Justice System
Students will be able to differentiate between the adult and juvenile justice systems.

Outcome 5: Evidence-Based Research Skills
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of research methods, scientific processes, and statistical tests to understand and interpret evidence-based research findings in the field of criminal justice and criminology.

Outcome 6: Communicating Criminal Justice Issues
Students will be able to articulate clearly the most relevant information on assigned topics.

Outcome 7: Law and Policy
Students will be able to discuss current (and landmark) legal decisions and the impact such decisions have on diverse societal members.
