Wachovia Pharmacy Fellows Program at ECSU
The Wachovia Pharmacy Fellows Program began in the summer of 2008. Each year, ECSU worked with regional high school guidance counselors to identify approximately 16 tenth grade students from Northeastern NC counties that excelled in math and science and were interested in pharmacy. The Fellows participated in enrichment programs through the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program in cooperation with the UNC-Chapel Hill/ECSU Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program. They completed intensive math and science courses and gained exposure to the profession of pharmacy as well as the relationship of math and science to a career in pharmacy. They had the opportunity to work closely with pharmacy faculty. The week- long summer programs were held each year to orient the Fellows to the practice of pharmacy and the 100 hour community pharmacy internship opportunity. Each Fellow was assigned a community pharmacist mentor in their county and received a stipend for completion of the internship hours in their local pharmacy. The volunteer experiences provided the Fellows exposure to community pharmacy practice, helped them gain a better understanding of pharmaceutical sciences, and enhanced their readiness for entry into a pharmacy program in the future.
An ECSU Wachovia Pre-Pharmacy Student Recruitment Scholarship was established in 2011 to provide additional support for students wishing to pursue a career in pharmacy. Wachovia Fellows are urged to apply, but applications from any incoming ECSU freshman may be considered. Scholarship application details may be found here.
The Wachovia Pharmacy Fellows Program is made possible by generous funding from the Wachovia Foundation.
