NASA/NC-MSEN S.P.A.C.E. (Students Preparing to Advance into Careers in Engineering)

The University of North Carolina-General Administration (UNC-GA) and its North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College Program (PCP) propose the NASA/NC-MSEN Students Preparing to Advance into Careers in Engineering (SPACE) project to serve 210 underrepresented rural, urban, and suburban students as rising 9th graders to their rising 11th grade school year. The students will be engaged in 200 hours of out-of-school time (OST), evening, Saturday, and Summer intensive year round (multi-year), hands-on, inquiry-based, student-centered STEM experiences in engineering, astronomy, physics, and robotics. The OST SPACE project complements and supplements in-school-time (IST) mathematics and science teaching and learning. SPACE partnerships bring an array of STEM intellectual and practical expertise that ensures the integration of NASA-related STEM content and resources into curricula and experiences for high school students, teachers and parents. Pre-College Experiences for Reaching Students Interested in Science Teaching (PERSIST)

The Pre-College Experiences for Reaching Students Interested in Science Teaching (PERSIST) Program is funded through the Burroughs Wellcome fund and administered through the North Carolina Mathematics & Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) state office in Chapel Hill. The PERSIST Program seeks to encourage high ability/high potential students to consider science and mathematics teaching as a college major and career.

Ten ninth grade students are currently taking enrichment courses in mathematics, science, and technology, with an emphasis on teacher education. Program participants were chosen from six neighboring counties in Northeastern North Carolina - Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Pasquotank, and Perquimans.

Enrichment classes will be offered through the Saturday Academy Program which meets 12-15 Saturdays during the academic year, and through the Summer Scholars residential Program which meets for one week in July.
