The
Department of Biology has been awarded $170,000 through the North
Carolina Biotechnology Center. This award entitled "Elizabeth
City State University Biotechnology-Program Initiative-Phase VIII"
will be used to support student research assistantships, additional
professional laboratory staff members and provide travel funds.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has been awarded
through various agencies to include the Department of Defense in the
amount of $196,227. The award entitled "DoD Computer Science
Instrumentation Improvement at ECSU" will be used to create a
computer laboratory, enhance faculty and student mentoring, research
and internship activities. Drs. Carolyn Mahoney and Hemant Pendharkar
will be the program directors for this exciting award. The U.S. Department
of Education has also awarded Mathematics and Computer Science with
a sum of $28,512. This award entitled "Minority Science and Engineering"
is to integrate more technology into the mathematics curriculum in
particular, the first year calculus courses. The two main objectives
of the project are to enhance the learning of the students and the
teaching of the instructors through technology and to create a series
of Mathematica worksheets that will develop the students mathematical
and critical thinking skills. Dr. Harold Ellingsen will be the program
director for this award. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) has awarded Mathematics and Computer Science a whopping $1,295,000.
This award is directed by Dr. Linda Hayden and is intended to involve
the design of an academic year research project which cross references
sea surface temperature data, which is concordence with marine mammals
Long Line data from NOAA which includes the by-product of turtle catches.
During the academic year computer science and geoscience students
from ECSU will be involved in processing of the data and posting or
results. Visiting Lecturers during the academic year and summer will
involve scientist from all the collaborating agencies. Summer internships
will also be funded through this project which will place undergraduate
students in NAVY and NOAA laboratories. Also in the Mathematics and
Computer Science Department, the National Science Foundation has funded
a scholarship in the amount of $390,250. This scholarship is for students
in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department with at least a
3.0 G.P.A. Dr. Carolyn R. Mahoney will be the director for this rewarding
and exciting opportunity. Please stop by with any questions or concerns
about this scholarship. Dr. Carolyn Mahoney is located in the Jenkins
Science Center, Room 400. The Department of Geological, Environmental
and Marine Sciences has been awarded through the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) $299,642. This proposal is to
strengthen the ability of the Elizabeth City State University to foster
student career in the environmental field by exploring the potential
application of satellite imageries to support the North Carolina Habitat
Protection Plans. Monies will be used to create the northeast's first
lab for the study of satellite images of coastal areas and waterways.
The lab will provide hands-on experience for students with remote
sensing equipment. This lab can be used by other government agencies
as well. The program director for this award is Dr. Francisco San
Juan.
The School of Mathematics, Science and Technology works hard to provide
students with the opportunity to excel here at Elizabeth City State
University. The School has brought in a total of $2,379,631so far.
More opportunities are awaiting the School of Mathematics, Science
and Technology and their students.
