Academic Affairs

As Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). As the ECSU community strives to achieve excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and service, it is my privilege to provide leadership in the areas of operation, planning, direction, and supervision of academic areas, programs and resources. Elizabeth City State University brings together a highly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff who are engaged in inspiring teaching, research and service. With three schools, thirteen departments, other distinctive academic programs and centers, the University offers a unique and quality educational experience while remaining a student centered organization. Our strategic goals are:

  • Create a student-centered environment to facilitate student's intellectual growth and success.
  • Engage and maintain a competent, qualified faculty that possesses current technical and professional knowledge and experience, engage in ongoing professional development, and has the ability to convey this knowledge to students.
  • Continue to build the University's reputation and recognition for quality academic programs by maintaining and pursuing professional, regional, specialized and national accreditations.
  • Provide comprehensive supportive services such as tutoring, mentoring and counseling to increase retention throughout undergraduate years.
  • Cultivate leadership, integrity, social equity, global understanding, and civic engagement to prepare students, faculty, and staff for meaningful contributions to society.

We are committed to ensuring rigorous academic programs that will challenge our students intellectually and focus on student retention, accountability of learning outcomes and faculty development.  ECSU's undergraduate programs are grounded in the tradition of a strong core in the liberal arts and sciences. The graduate studies at ECSU prepare students professionally and challenges them academically to meet the intellectual, professional and credentialing needs of the region. As always, we plan to achieve accreditation for all of our programs for which a national accreditation exists. This past year we finalized the Social Work accreditation by CSWE (Council on Social Work Education). This year we are planning to renew Music accreditation by NASM (National Association for Schools of Music), pursue Art accreditation by NASAD (National Association for Schools of Art and Design) and the accreditation of Engineering Technology by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology) slated for next year. The renewal of Teacher Education accreditation by CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) is also in progress. The curriculum and culture uniquely address each area of our mission statement, preparing learners to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, responsible learners and global citizens. Our carefully selected majors develop understanding of the importance of method, craft and expertise in helping to make sense of a complex world. In our offerings, students are taught how to write more thoughtfully, express themselves more carefully, observe more closely, and listen more empathetically than ever before.

I am proud to work with a dynamic and talented group of faculty and staff who are passionate about their work and dedicated to helping students achieve success. Everyone within the Division of Academic Affairs is dedicated to sustaining the highest standards of teaching, research and service for our students and for all our stakeholders. As a team, we are positioning Elizabeth City State University for a brighter future, and we welcome you to become part our community. If you have questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact me.
