University Relations & Marketing

Elizabeth City State University has a long tradition of fostering a family-like atmosphere among students, faculty and staff. Therefore, University Relations and Marketing will communicate confirmed deaths that occur in the Viking family using the following guidelines.

Internal Email

  1. University Relations and Marketing will distribute email notices to the university community to announce deaths of ECSU employees and students.
  2. University Relations and Marketing will distribute email notices to all employees to announce the deaths of spouses, parents, siblings, children, and grandparents of ECSU employees.
    • Email notices announcing the death of an employee's immediate family member will be distributed typically when the details of the funeral or memorial service have been provided to University Relations and Marketing.
    • If the request to announce the death of the immediate family member is made by a co-worker or supervisor, the bereaved family must approve the announcement before the email can be distributed. The person submitting the announcement should provide proof of the bereaved family's approval in writing.

Web Posting of Death Notices

ONLY death notices about ECSU employees and students will be posted on the ECSU website. A "Notices" link will be placed near the bottom of the ECSU website home page. Information on the linked page will include the death announcement and funeral/memorial service arrangements. Other select information may be included. The link will remain active on the home page until 24 hours following the funeral or memorial service.
