University Relations & Marketing

University Relations and Marketing provides assistance with photography of major university events. Faculty and staff are welcome to check out a digital camera. Perhaps, you need to document events for departmental files, grant applications or replies to sources that provided funding (grants). A loaner camera would serve your purpose. Perhaps you would like to photograph individual participants (12 or more) or award winners at your ceremony or contest. A loaner camera would serve your purpose. Perhaps your event will extend beyond the slated time frame, usually an hour, a photographer is available. A loaner camera would serve your purpose.

The department offers helpful photography tips for faculty and staff who check out loaner cameras.

Photography tips to remember:

  • Composition - the arrangement of subjects appearing in your image; be mindful of nearby objects or people that might distract the viewer from your intended subject.
  • Lighting - be mindful of the amount and direction of available light in a room or area where images are made. Additional lighting from flashes may be necessary to improve the amount of light on the subject. Make sure you have adequate supplies (batteries on hand.)  Practice a few shots before completing your assignment and carefully review images before leaving an event. If you are photographing humans, make sure their eyes are open and their facial expressions are acceptable before ending your photo shoot. If you posed a group of people for a photograph, make sure each face is visible. Unless you are using a wide-angle lens, avoid placing more than 10 people in a group shot. Gather correct spellings for each person as they appear in the photograph. For example, standing left to right are Jane Doe, John Doe, Joy Doe and Jeremy Doe.
  • Vantage point - Be mindful of the angle from which you are shooting. Determine if the best images can be made in front of the subject or from a side angle.
  • Children - avoid taking images for publication or publicity purposes of minors unless you have an adequate release form currently on file that gives you or your organization permission to publish the images.
  • Meal time - avoid taking pictures of people while they are eating or consuming a beverage.
  • Story line - photography at the University in its best form relays a positive, accurate story line for the reader/viewer.

University Relations and Marketing reserves the right to select, edit and use submitted images as deemed necessary and suitable for university publicity and marketing purposes.

In the case of weeklong observances that include multiple events, the program coordinator and Director of Media Relations will converse to identify those events that are best illustrated by photography.

Given the numerous requests for photography, the Director of Media Relations may determine the best service is to set a select number of images following an event. Since freelance photographers assist the department and may not recognize university officials and personnel, the program coordinator should be available to assist the photographer in identifying the subjects whose photographs need be made.

Please remember, most freelance photographers charge an hourly fee and are available to work for a specified time frame only. Those arrangements are made well in advance of the event. If your organization would like to hire a photographer to cover the entire event, the Director of Media Relations can help you identify a qualified photographer.
