Teaching Earth Science to Inspire New Geologists (7/15-7/26)
Start Date: 7/15/2013 All Day
End Date: 7/15/2013
Event Description
The goal of the project is to increase middle school student interest in the Earth sciences by intensive instruction in basic geological content prior to their required high school Earth science course. This is especially important given that historically, the Earth sciences have received less attention in the North Carolina public schools than most other science disciplines, with Earth science having only been made a requirement for high school graduation in 2000. As a result, students will be able to understand more of the presented material in the course and be able to ask more relevant questions when they arrive in high school. Moreover, they will be motivated to pursue careers in the Earth sciences after graduation.
The two-week workshop is designed to get the students familiar with Earth processes to inspire not only an awareness of geological processes, but to also set them on a learning path to become the next generation of Earth scientists through hands-on activities, field trips and critical thinking projects.
