High Performance Building Leadership

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED

Charles Hall, Director of Design and Construction, and Elizabeth Linney, University Program Specialist, Design and Construction, attended LEED Green Associate classes and are certified as LEED Green Associates.  Both Hall and Linney also attended LEED Accredited Professional (AP) Green Building Design and Construction classes.

Sustainable Design and Construction

The mission of the Design and Construction Department is to plan and implement facility and infrastructure improvements to meet the current and future needs of the ECSU community by providing quality management of design and construction projects.

Sustainable Campus Design has become a priority in the Office of Design and Construction. We are determined to provide the finest learning and working environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Sustainable Construction Projects on the Campus of ECSU:

Willie and Jacqueline Gilchrist Education and Psychology Complex

Willie and Jacqueline Gilchrist Education and Psychology Complex

  • 80 geothermal wells with multi-stack water source heat pumps for heating and cooling
  • Master lighting control system by Lutron
  • Occupancy sensors in all spaces
  • All public spaces controlled by ambient light sensors
  • LED ceiling fixtures in hallways adjacent to curtain walls in lieu of fluorescent fixtures
  • Filtered water bottle filling station on all floors
  • Two sets of recycling containers on each floor
  • White EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer -  rubber) roof
  • All stairwells have natural lighting

  • State-of-the-art electrical sub meter system. Every power panel, lighting panel and transformer feed from the main switch board is sub metered.
  • Occupancy and light level controls for all lighting
  • All stairwells have natural lighting
  • Irrigation-free landscaping

Walter and Henrietta Ridley Student Center

Walter and Henrietta Ridley Student Center

  • 13kW photovoltaic array mounted on a white membrane roof
  • All power enters the buildings main electrical feed and decreases the energy costs to operate the facility
  • A computer kiosk was provided in the lobby to allow students to see the electricity created real time.
