Biography:
Dr. Melody G. Brackett is an Associate Professor and Director of the Social Work Program in the Department of Criminal Justice, Sociology, and Social Work. She primarily teaches Pre-Professional Social Work courses and provides leadership around the issues of strategic direction, program operation, program/curriculum development, and program assessment. She has also taught classes in the Sociology Program.

Dr. Brackett has over 23 years of social work experience. Her career paths include university counselor, career counselor, tutorial coordinator, social worker at a residential treatment center, and case worker. She has been at Elizabeth City State University since 1992. In 2008, she was the recipient of the Departmental Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Brackett obtained her Ph.D. and MSW from Norfolk State University and obtained her BA Degree in Sociology/Social Work from Elizabeth City State University.

Dr. Brackett’s research interests include the role of spirituality and religion in social work education and practice, the role and functions of religious congregations, with special attention to the Black Church in social service delivery, and the impact of public policies such as Charitable Choice and Faith-Based Initiatives in social work education and practice. She has conducted workshops at national conferences. Topics have included “Black Pastors and Government Funding: Results of a Survey, This Far By Faith: The Role of the Black Church in Ministering to Families Affected by Deployment, and Spirituality and End-of-Life Care".
