Using the Library

G.R. Little Library

All patrons who wish to check out materials from any service desk in the library are expected to have a current library card. They are available at the Circulation Desk.

The Reference Department provides Patron assistance, instruction and interlibrary loan service. It circulates (for in-house use only) materials from the Pamphlet File, Reference and Ready Reference collections.

The Serial and Media Departments facilitate access to journal indexes and journal in unbound and micro-formats. (Bound journals are classified and housed in the Reference stacks.) In addition, the Media Department provides access to the wide array of sound and visual formats and services available to the University community, with the exception of teleconferencing.

The Circulation Department issues library cards, maintains and circulates both the general collection and reserve books, houses and dispenses lost and found items, issues fine statements and clears satisfied patron charges, issues any necessary remote access codes, and manages reserve reading rooms.

Order requests may be submitted at any service desk.

The collection is organized utilizing the Library of Congress Classification System.

Horizon is the integrated database system used by the library to provide its online catalog and automated circulation function. Access to many online databases is provided through the statewidesystem, NC Live. Information on remote access to these systems is available at the Circulation desk.

The Library adheres to and facilitates the enforcement of all policies, rules and regulations of Elizabeth City State University and the University of North Carolina. Mutilation or theft of any library property is considered a misdemeanor under North Carolina Law (§ 14-398) and, upon conviction, can carry a fine and/or imprisonment.

In order to preserve the valuable informational resources available through the library, patrons are prohibited from bringing food and/or drink (including water) into the building. The Library is a smoke-free environment.

The general loan period for circulating materials is two weeks. Renewals are subject to recall.

Reference books, serials, periodicals, microforms, newspapers or other non-circulating, materials may not be removed from the building.

Photocopy machines are located on each floor of the library. The cost is ten cents ($.10) per copy.

A public telephone is located at the main exit of the building. The use of office telephones is restricted to staff members.

Public restrooms are located adjacent to the elevator on each floor.

Individual study rooms are available upon request.

A fine of twenty-five cents ($.25) per day per book is charged for overdue general circulation items.

A fine of one dollar ($1.00) per hour per item –not to exceed eight dollars ($8.00) per item—is assessed for overdue reserve materials.

The current replacement cost plus a processing fee is assessed for lost items.

A fee of one dollar ($1.00) is assessed for the replacement of lost library cards.

All fines must be paid at the University Cashier's Office. A patron is not cleared to resume borrowing privileges until paid receipts are presented to the Circulation Department staff and the account is cleared in the library's online system.
