Delores Locke McClain to be Crowned Ms. Alumni 2017-18
There’s so much to celebrate during the Elizabeth City State University Homecoming, but for returning alumni, aside from happy trips down memory lane, perhaps honoring one of their own tops the list, and that means crowning Ms. Alumni.
For the 2017 ECSU Homecoming celebration, Delores Locke McClain has been named Ms. Alumni 2017. Ms. McClain is a member of the ECSU Class of 1970.
Raised in Oak City, North Carolina, Ms. McClain graduated from ECSU with a degree in math and science. That degree led to a master’s degree from the University of District of Columbia, and more than 40 years as a dedicated educator, teaching science and math in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County, Maryland public schools.
During her long career as an educator, she received numerous awards and honors. Among those is the United States Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science, one of the highest awards given to an educator by the White House. She has received the Growth Initiative for Teachers Award, the Fortitude Image Award in the Field of Community Service in Education, and has been included in the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
Ms. McClain is also a small business owner and a recipient of the Woman of the Year Award from the American Business Women’s Association.
But for all of the accomplishments and all of the recognition Ms. McClain has earned over the years, she has said that her first love is ECSU, and her work for her alma mater bears out that fact.
Ms. McClain is the past President of the William T. Bowser, Sr., Alumni Chapter of Elizabeth City State University National Alumni Association. She has worked over the years to inspire, encourage, and recruit students for ECSU, supporting student tours with the goal of increasing enrollment.
The Ms. Alumni coronation happens Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m., inside the K.E. White Center.
