Aspirational Statement by
Abdul Rasheed, Chair, ECSU Board of Trustees

Elizabeth City State University is a legacy institution built on the tradition of educating teachers to teach and train African Americans. As a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina, ECSU seeks to continue to contribute to the University system’s commitment to provide minority access to high quality affordable relevant education while maintaining a supportive environment for the education of all people.

Building on strong core assets, the future of the ECSU will be based on its teacher education, aviation/aeronautics, allied health including pharmacy, and business programs. From these core programs, the university will work collaboratively to carve out its identity as a first-rate comprehensive institution that offers high quality academic programs at the most competitive price.

With respect to this aspiration, ECSU seeks to move from “Success to Significance” as a regional higher education center, built on high standards of excellence and integrity.

ECSU will continue in the future as an academy that produces graduates with the competence, skills and personal values to compete and lead in an ever-changing world.

Further, built on a value proposition that is based in excellence in teaching, research, public service and citizenship, ECSU will develop as a regional university collaborating with both the business and public sectors to grow as an economic engine to both determine and sustain the region’s future economy.

ECSU will maintain a student-centered environment dedicated to the retention and graduation of all its students, offering each global exposure and full utilization of today’s technologies as a base to appropriately build the technology of the future, along with other innovative career pathways.

The leader we seek will have the opportunity to lead us from “Success to Significance” by enhancing ECSU’s reputation and brand recognition as a nationally prominent university,
