CHEM 401: Biochemistry: (3) (F;S)
This introductory course covers the chemistry of essential biological molecules focusing on protein chemistry, while covering lipids and carbohydrates. It presents a systematic and methodical application of general and organic chemistry principles. The course examines the structure of proteins and folding, their function, their binding to other molecules. Enzymes, mechanisms, kinetics, and allostery; bioenergetics; vitamins and coenzymes; introduction to intermediary metabolism are discussed in detail. Metabolic pathways are examined from thermodynamic and regulatory perspectives. This course provides the connection between the inert world of chemistry and the living world of biology.
