The BSBA degree provides basic professional preparation for careers in business, government, and non-profit organizations, with specific focus on administration. In addition to the general education courses, students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree (BSBA) take business core subjects which help them gain general business knowledge.

Department Mission:
The Department of Business, Accounting and Sport Management transforms students into competent professionals who contribute to the economic growth and development of Northeast North Carolina and beyond. We achieve this through classroom-based, online, and experiential learning, relevant research, and engagement with the community and key stakeholders.

We aspire to reach diverse students and increase their economic mobility while preparing them to be valuable members of the business community in northeastern North Carolina and beyond

All Business Administration majors must select an area of concentration: Economics & Finance, Management & Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Management Information Systems. The curriculum is designed to help students develop the ability to evaluate and make business decisions in changing competitive, economic, legal, political, social/cultural, and technology environments; familiarize themselves with the dynamics of the internal organization and operations of business firms; develop skills in identifying problems, issues, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats confronting business firms; acquire tools, methods, and techniques for analyzing and solving business problems and opportunities; and the ability to develop and implement strategies.

 The primary learning objectives for the Business Administration program are:

  • Application of critical thinking skills to business decisions
  • Recognition of ethical dilemmas in business and professional environments and demonstration social responsibility.
  • Application and use of fundamental principles from the core knowledge base of Business Administration specific to the areas of accounting, economics, finance, information systems, international business, legal and social environment, management, marketing and qualitative business analysis.
  • Effective communication in both oral and written formats.

100% of students complete a 150 hours internship.

132 students have graduated from the Business Administration program in the last four years and have been either gainfully employed or have gone on to graduate schools.

Problem-based Learning Projects have been implemented in several classes. The approach allowed the students to learn through the experience of solving problems in a way that they learn both the content and the thinking strategies.

Experiential learning through internship and class projects have provided unique opportunities to promote teamwork and communications in workplaces.

ECSU has a 2+2 Online degree completion program that provides flexibility for student schedules. This agreement is ONLY with the following regional community colleges with the indicated Associates of Applied Science degree.

  • EDGECOMBE COMMUNITY COLLEGE – Associate in Applied Science: General Business Administration

These articulation agreements allow students, who have completed an associate degree in business administration the opportunity to complete their baccalaureate degree at ECSU, completely online.

The programs in Business Administration, Accounting and Sport Management are AACSB Accredited (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).

AACSB International accredits the business administration program. The accreditation is a gold standard in business education, which endorses that the Department is committed to fulfilling its mission and continues to sustain and improve the educational quality of its undergraduate degree program. Only a limited number of schools are accredited by AACSB using the business standards of AACSB International as interpreted by its peer review team(s), accreditation committees, and the Board of Directors.
