Found in 1891, Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) was established for the specific purpose of "teaching and training teachers". Since that time, ECSU has produced thousands of teachers, many whom became successful principals, superintendents, college professors and college presidents/chancellors.

We take pride in serving a challenging region, northeastern North Carolina. Many students enter our institution with a SAT score lower than the state average. However, the Department of Education, Psychology, and Health embraces all students with an ultimate goal of producing a well prepared, well qualified teacher, while providing a nurturing and attentive environment.

The Department of Education, Psychology, and Health and the schools that offer minors in education, Arts and Humanities and Math, Science and Technology, attract and retain a diverse and highly qualified faculty that educate and lead students to become productive members of a global and increasingly interdependent society. We continue to be a leading partner in enhancing educational and cultural opportunities, while contributing to the growth and economic strength in the region. Through teaching, research, and community engagement, the Department of Education, Psychology, and Health provides a student-centered environment, delivered in a manner that enhances student learning, as well as preparing graduates for leadership roles and lifelong learning.

  • Our programs are state and nationally accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
  • Many of our graduates have received the honor of teacher of the year and principal of the year locally and statewide. Currently, the principal of the year for Elizabeth City/Pasquotank School System s is a former graduate of ECSU. A high percentage of our candidates complete student teaching and are employed in this county.
  • Our students gain experiences in our local schools through spending several clinical practice hours working directly with highly qualified teachers, many with Master's Degrees and National Board Certification.
  • Professional development is offered ongoing to educators (including former graduates, initially licensed, seasoned teachers and administrators), to stay abreast with current teaching strategies and curriculum changes to effectively implement the Common Core and Essential Standards.
  • Our students are supported through their first three years of teaching. ECSU offers an Educational Warranty Program. This program is designed to ensure excellence in teaching performance for ECSU Teacher Education Program graduates, by providing them with assistance to improve individual skills. The program provides a three-year “warranty" for any teaching graduate who has achieved initial North Carolina licensure and who is employed in a participating North Carolina School System in the area of licensure.
  • Students benefit from small class sizes and ongoing faculty advisement.
  • Students have traveled abroad to gain experience and knowledge of other cultures. This experience can be transferred into the classroom to broaden the awareness of a multicultural society.
  • Students complete surveys in intervals during program matriculation. This data is used to for improving programs and increasing services to meet the needs of all students.
  • Due to the increasing requests for potential employment of our graduates, a list of graduates with contact information is now posted on the Teacher Education webpage each semester for easy access.
  • Well over half of our graduates receive employment soon after graduation.
  • Our current pass rate on the Praxis II exam for Elementary Education and Special Education is 94%. This exceeds the NCATE minimum score of 80%.
  • The Department of Education, Psychology, and Health has a Curriculum Materials Center (CMC). This center houses materials for current students, beginning teachers, and seasoned teachers. The CMC provides an array, reading, science, math and other content area materials for in-house use or on-loan basis. The Center provides teachers with the availability of resources to assist with daily instruction.
  • ECSU faculty continues to work with former students in their classrooms. They also serve on school committees, councils and collaborate on grants with teachers and administrators.
  • Public school teachers and administrators serve on various Teacher Education committees at ECSU. They are an integral part of preparing our students for the classroom.
  • We use data to continuously improve in an effort to offer a strong quality program while meeting state, national and program standards. We focus on continuous improvement for our programs by setting yearly goals and reviewing the data to make decisions. We use Taskstream, an online system that stores and generates data for program improvement.
  • We use the data provided by the University of North Carolina General Administration for program improvement.
  • The Teacher Education Advisory Council (TEAC), consists of program coordinators, department chairs, deans, current students, LEA personnel, and other university key personnel, oversees the Teacher Education Program and addresses immediate needs. TEAC receives recommendations and must approve all Teacher Education program changes.
  • A new 47, 991 square foot education building was completed in 2012. This building is equipped with the latest technology including, classrooms with smart boards, white boards, and document cameras. Computers are available for student checkout. Students are encouraged to bring their devices to class for active learning. The facility also houses a Praxis Study Lab and a Computer Lab for student use.
