The English major prepares students for a variety of careers, educational pathways, and experiences. Our majors study literature, composition, multimodal forms of argument, learn about how language is used, why it matters, and apply this to interrogate and interpret the world around them. In our ever-changing world, we prepare our students to synthesize and respond to different digital modes of writing and texts. Our students become web content creators, teachers, social media managers, and scholars. The skills they receive here prepare them for public service, news reporting, marketing, publishing, and technical writing. They go onto graduate programs in English and Education and attend Law school.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to analyze works of literature with an emphasis on British and American literature, highlighting the skills of reading comprehension, literary term identification, and knowledge of significant British and American literary movements and authors.
  • Students will be able to define and use terms important in English studies and identify key periods and authors in British and American literature.
  • Students will be able to incorporate research in well-organized argumentative essays that competently develop a research question and use relevant source material.

Additional Information:

Many of our recent graduates are pursuing graduate degrees in various fields including Education, English, and Film and Television. Others have entered the workforce.

Small class sizes in our upper-level courses allows for individual attention.
