Professional Development Workshops

The Office of Distance Education offers opportunities for professional development throughout the academic year. Professional development workshops are offered through multiple delivery methods including face-to-face sessions, online courses, and webinars. Our focus is to prepare faculty to design and deliver online courses. Workshops cover both technology features and functionality as well as online teaching best practices and pedagogy. Some workshops are required for faculty to be eligible to teach online courses. See the professional development schedule and registration form below.

Blackboard Online Certification Course **

Fall Cohort - Register anytime to begin the certification course | Online 3 week course              

Major Topics: The Teaching and Learning Online Certification Series includes three Blackboard online training modules. These modules cover features of Blackboard as well as online pedagogy.

 Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR)**
Major Topics: Participants will learn the underlying principles behind the Quality Matters Rubric and how to apply the rubric standards to their online course design.

1. Blackboard: Introduction to Blackboard Learn *  

Major Topics: This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the Blackboard Learn interface and features.

Participants will become familiar with the following:

  • Site navigation: tabs and modules, my courses module and settings, My Announcements
  • The course environment: the course menu, content areas, the content frame, tools, orientation bar and action bar
  • Viewing a course from the student and instructor perspective
  • Creating and Scheduling Announcements
  • The control panel
  • Making a course available

2.  Blackboard: Presenting Content *

Major Topics: This workshop introduces participants to the various content types they can create in their courses. Faculty will begin to build a framework for their course content.

Participants will become familiar with the following:

  • Creating, editing, and deleting content
  • Presenting content: creating content areas, folders, and learning modules and understanding pros and cons of each.
  • Organizing content
  • Accessible Content

3. Blackboard: Assessments *

Major Topics: This workshop provides an introduction to both the test and survey tools, with a focus on creating and deploying tests.

Participants will become familiar with the following:

  • Creating, editing, and deleting test and surveys
  • Test question settings
  • Questions types
  • Deploying a test and test availability options
  • Grading tests

4. Blackboard: Assignments and Rubrics *

Major Topics: This workshop introduces participants to the benefits of using Assignments, Safe Assign (anti-plagiarism tool), and Rubrics.

Participants will become familiar with the following:

  • Creating, editing, and deleting assignments
  • Providing clear expectations and detailed directions
  • Setting up Safe Assign
  • Creating rubrics
  • Grading assignments

5. Blackboard: Developing Successful Online Discussions *

Major Topics: This workshop introduces participants to the grade center and how to customize the grade center to meet their needs.

Participants will become familiar with the following:

  • Creating, editing, and deleting discussion forums
  • Understanding forums, threads, and posts
  • Linking a discussion board within a content area or folder
  • Defining participation requirements
  • Grading discussions

6.     Blackboard: Mastering the Grade Center *

 Major Topics: This workshop introduces participants to the grade center and how to customize the grade center to meet their needs.

  • Menu options
  • Grade center icon legend
  • Grade an assignment with a rubric

Introduction to Echo360 *

Major Topics:

This workshop provides an introduction to the Echo360 Universal Capture application. Participants will learn how to record their audio, video, and computer screen with one easy to use tool. Participants will learn how to access their Echo360 library within the learning management system.

Exam Proctoring: Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor

 Major Topics: This workshop is intended for instructors who plan to use LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor with online exams. The session provides a detailed demonstration of both applications, including enhancements that make Respondus Monitor even more effective and easy to use.
