Popular Degree Programs
Although international students can study in any of our thirty-one degree programs, ECSU offers certain programs NOT available at most other universities. We are particularly proud of our Pharmaceutical Science, Aviation Science, Business Administration, and Accounting degree programs.
Our Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) is a four-year undergraduate program. The pharmaceutical sciences combine a broad range of scientific disciplines that are critical to development and discovery of new drugs and therapies. The degree is designed for students seeking careers in the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology industry, biomedical industry, pharmaceutical sales, pharmacy, and health care administration.
Although over half of our graduates continue on to pursue the PharmD, the BSPS program does not qualify graduates to take licensure examinations to become registered pharmacist.
During the first two years of the BSPS program, students complete a number of general science courses, such as chemistry, biology, and physiology, as well as general education courses required for graduation. During their junior and senior years, students complete major-specific courses that will equip them with the necessary skills to be a valuable asset to the drug discovery and development process.
The brand-new $28 million Pharmacy Complex might well be the most impressive building on campus. It contains general science labs for Pre-Pharmacy students, Biochemistry and Microbiology. Community outreach areas such as the Drug Information Center, Library, AHEC faculty offices, and large classrooms are located on the first floor. IV Simulation and Compounding Labs are located on the second floors, with three research labs (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medicinal Chemistry) located on the third floor. Other classrooms, group meeting rooms, and offices are distributed along the three floors creating a collaborative environment for the students, faculty, and staff.
Students participate in laboratory research as part of the BSPS program. Development of research scientists should begin at the undergraduate level with a positive, challenging, and nurturing research environment. BSPS students will have the opportunity to be involved in any of the research projects available in the department as their schedule and interest permit.
Our Aviation Science Program, a part of the Department of Technology, educates and trains students for careers and opportunities in aviation and space science. The University's proximity to the many large and small businesses, manufacturers, military installations, and government agencies that are integrally involved with aviation and aerospace makes Elizabeth City State University ideally located for students interested in aviation and aerospace careers. For our students interested in careers as professional pilots, the weather and temperatures of northeastern North Carolina are nearly perfect for maximizing the number of days available for flight training activities.
As the only four-year collegiate aviation education program in the State of North Carolina, the mission of the Aviation Science Program is to provide quality aviation education to a diverse group of students, especially those who have been underrepresented in the aviation and aerospace industries.
The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Science with minors in
the areas of Aviation Management, Electronics, Aviation Computer Science, Avionics,
Public Administration, Flight Education, and Space Science
ECSU has two new 172 SP model Cessna planes (purchased 2010 and 2011)--Air Viking I and Air Viking II.
Business and Economics
Home to the Business Administration and Accounting degree programs, our Department of Business and Economics at Elizabeth City State University represents the best of the best. Holding accreditation from the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business, the hallmark for excellence in business education, our programs rank among the top 5% worldwide. Our top students are invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, the most prestigious and respected of the business honor societies globally.
We are a diverse institution, with faculty from seven different countries. Their research interests reflect not only their diverse disciplinary backgrounds but their countries of origin as well. Our small class sizes and advising by professors gives students the opportunity to work more closely with these professors and prepare for graduate school.
Our finance lab is one of only three in the UNC system that utilizes dual trading screens and stands alone for the use of the labs both in teaching our classes and in access to the labs as early as the freshman year. Future entrepreneurs can not only take courses that prepare you to start, finance and run your own business, but they have the opportunity to take part in the UNC Social Entrepreneurship Business Plan Competition, where our teams have made the final round consistently. Future accountants can prepare themselves for the CPA exam by completing the 150 hours through double majoring in accounting and business administration.
