upward bound program
Elizabeth City State University's Upward Bound is a pre-college program designed for students residing in Northeastern North Carolina. The target areas consist of six counties (Chowan, Gates, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington). Two-thirds of the eligible participants will be low-income and potential first-generation college students; one-third will be either low-income only or first-generation college students.
Elizabeth City State University Upward Bound goals and objectives will be achieved through the implementation of the core curriculum, counseling, academic advisement, tutoring, and mentoring program. This multi-purpose program will provide outreach and supportive services to 73 participants. These services are:
instruction in reading, writing, mathematics through pre-calculus, science with laboratory
experiences, and other subjects necessary for success beyond high school;
academic advisement and assistance in high school course selection;
mentoring programs involving elementary or secondary school teachers, faculty members, administrators at institutions of higher education, and other professional individuals;
exposure to cultural events, academic programs, and other activities not usually available to disadvantaged youth;
activities designed to acquaint youth participating in the project with the range of career options available to them;
instructions designed to prepare youth participating in the project for careers in which persons from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly underrepresented;
on-campus residential programs, and the Summer Bridge Component;
work-study positions to expose participants to careers requiring a post-secondary degree.
The Upward Bound Program will consist of an Academic Year Component (AY) and a six week Summer Component.
