Canvas LMS

Canvas LMS is a cloud-based learning management system (LMS) used by educational institutions and companies to manage online learning, distribute course materials, grade assignments, and facilitate communication, developed by Instructure.

Canvas is ECSU’s Learning Management System (LMS). It is an online education technology used for campus courses to help drive student & faculty success.

How to get help

  • Login to Canvas and click the help button in the blue global navigation bar on the left. You can either chat or call and you always talk with a live person. 24/7

  • Instructors have access to “Canvas Basics” training course Login to Canvas and click on “Help” in the blue bar on the left side, then click on “Training Services Portal”.

How Participants Are Enrolled in Canvas

  • If you have trouble logging in, please contact the IT help desk. Adding participants and courses in Canvas is automated; information from Banner is automatically imported into Canvas We have several designations in Banner that define how participants are enrolled (Instructors, Co-Instructors, TAs, students, etc.).
  • All students, instructors, secondary instructors, and TAs, are enrolled every three hours throughout each day.
  • To add or modify official participants to your course, such as additional Instructors or TAs, please contact your departmental admin (the same individual that created your course) to add the additional participants to your course.
  • The one exception is a Designer; instructors can add designers to their course at any time. Designers can help with any/all content in a course but cannot interact with students or see grades. They can copy content in or out of the course.

A Student Auditor (“observer” in Canvas) can see all the content in the course but cannot participate or be graded.


If your course is not an official catalog course of record, please contact the IT Help Desk, and we will assist you in adding proper participants to the proper roles of a course.
