Background

Title IX was instrumental in banning sex discrimination in schools in 1972. It is known for ensuring equality in sports for women and men. It also requires fair treatment for pregnant and parenting students, protects students from bullying and sexual harassment (including sexual violence) and more.

ECSU's Commitment

We are committed to ensuring that every member of our community enjoys an environment free of sex discrimination and sexual harassment. Consistent with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, ECSU does not discriminate against students, employees or members of the community on the basis of sex in any of its programs or activities. Sexual harassment (including sexual violence) is a kind of sex discrimination and is prohibited by Title IX and by ECSU.

Title IX requires that all educational institutions that receive federal funds or financial assistance prohibit sex discrimination in their education programs and activities. These provisions apply to all programs and activities, including recruitment, student admissions, financial assistance, housing, access to academic offerings and athletics.

The university has adopted the following policy to adhere to the requirements under Title IX:

What types of conduct are prohibited under Title IX?

Title IX prohibits all forms of discrimination and harassment based on sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and gender expression. This includes sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, interpersonal violence (which includes relationship violence, dating violence, and domestic violence), and stalking. In addition it prohibits any and all forms of retaliation. Students, faculty, or staff who violate our policies may face discipline, up to and including, expulsion or termination. Title IX applies to all students, faculty, staff, contractors, visitors and third parties.
