Program Overview

The Military Science minor at Elizabeth City State University is offered through the U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. This program prepares students to become leaders by developing skills in organization, leadership, ethics, and military science.

Students gain foundational and advanced training that prepares them for leadership roles in the United States Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.

What You’ll Study

Based on the ROTC structure, the Military Science minor includes coursework in leadership, management, and military studies.

Areas of study include:

  • Leadership and management principles
  • Military history and organization
  • Small unit tactics and operations
  • Ethical decision-making and teamwork
  • Applied leadership in real-world scenarios

Students progress from foundational knowledge to more advanced leadership training.


Program Structure

The Military Science minor follows the ROTC structure of Basic Courses and Advanced Courses.

Basic Courses (No Service Obligation)

  • MIS 101 – Basic Military Science I
  • MIS 102 – Basic Military Science II
  • MIS 201 – Applied Leadership and Management
  • MIS 202 – Applied Leadership and Management II
  • MIS 303 – U.S. Military History

Basic Combat Training or Cadet Basic Camp may satisfy some of these requirements.

Advanced Courses (Service Commitment Required)

  • MIS 301 – Leadership and Management I
  • MIS 302 – Leadership and Management II
  • MIS 401 – Advanced Leadership and Management I
  • MIS 402 – Advanced Leadership and Management II

Students must complete the Basic Courses before enrolling in Advanced Courses.

Upon completion of the program and ROTC requirements, students may commission as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard.


Career Opportunities

The Military Science minor prepares students for leadership roles in both military and civilian careers.

Students may pursue careers in:

  • Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard
  • Government and public service
  • Law enforcement and security services
  • Emergency management
  • Business and organizational leadership

The leadership, discipline, and decision-making skills developed in this program are highly transferable and valued across industries.

Hands-On Learning

The Military Science minor emphasizes experiential learning and leadership development.

Students may:

  • Participate in leadership labs and field training
  • Attend Cadet Summer Training programs
  • Engage in team-based exercises and simulations
  • Participate in internships and specialized Army training programs

Opportunities include programs such as Airborne School, Air Assault School, and leadership internships.
