Program Description:
The National Summer Transportation Institute is geared to introducing STEM careers in transportation. Our program will impact middle school students by providing career awareness and learning experiences that focus on transportation and related courses of study. Students will enroll in five classes; Enhancement, STEM, Entrepreneurship, Career Exploration, and Project Designing. During this four-week period, students will be exposed to rigorous hands- on, inquiry-based activities and lab experiences in STEM. The summer session will include field trips and other activities that incorporate self-discovery, cooperative learning, goal setting, career exploration, as well as academic/career advising.

The program capitalizes on the increasing popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as Drones, to spark student interest and provide an experiential learning opportunity (ELO) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hands-on project activities, students will be engaged real-world engineering design and scientific investigation using drones. The academy is funded through grants from NASA and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund grant.

Program Description:
The NSTI program at ECSU is funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)/NC DOT and is in its 22nd year. The goal of the program is to expose high school students to careers in transportation and how STEM training is the key to obtain theses careers. The four-week program covers topics in physics, electronics, programming, computer-aided-design, and mathematics. Lectures are complimented by weekly field trips and guest speakers. The theme of this summer's STI program is Designing and Programming Robotic Ground Vehicles.

Program Description:
The ECSU Air Force JROTC Flight Academy, program, is an approximately 8-week summer aviation training program, conducted in partnership Air Force. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a Private Pilot’s Certification. The Flight Academy is intended to inspire and encourage high school youth toward aviation careers. This collaborative effort addresses a national pilot shortage.

Program Description:
The Residential component of the Upward Bound is designed to generate in its participants,
the skills and motivation necessary to persist in, enter into and complete a program
of secondary and post-secondary education. The summer instructional component is an
intensive academic, vocational and social development program, designed to establish
and maintain excellence in education. Students receive the opportunity to live on
the university campus and participate in academic and cultural activities which provide
students with insights and experiences that will generate the motivation necessary
to proceed with their education
*The Upward Bound Program is a year-round program with an Academic and Summer Component,
any student that is accepted will participate until they graduate from high school.

Programs for College Students
Invited Participants: Rising Freshmen joining ECSU during Fall 2022
Program Dates: 7/18/22-8/13/22
Program Description:
This summer bridge program is the first part of an evidence-based and piloted comprehensive
academic program for first year minority students at ECSU. The project has both a
four-weeks-long, summer bridge component and a full academic year academic support.
Bridge program modules are well-structured, integrated and comprehensive that include
discussions on scientific literacy, critical thinking & study skills. with activities
that promote cognitive processing of information and problem-solving strategies with
the goal of strengthening independent learning. In addition, during the four weeks
period, students will attend intensive classes in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
At the completion of the summer bridge program, each successful participant will receive
a stipend of $1500.

Invited Participants: Rising Sophomores at ECSU
Program Description:
Prepare the raising sophomore for their upcoming academic year. Will have time management, personal finances, personal hygiene in addition to mathematics, writing and reading and presentation skill development. Will have basic and fun computer skill development activities there too. Will try to have fun activities of games, field trips. Overall team building and networking effort.

Program Description:
Provide students hands-on training on renewable energy systems, specifically wind and solar energy. Students will be prepared to take PV solar certification. Participants will receive a stipend of $2,500.
