Bracy C. Martin, Jr. Named Interim Band Director at ECSU
Accomplished alumnus and music educator steps into leadership role following Juliet Boykins. Ph.D
Elizabeth City, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) has announced Bracy C. Martin, Jr. as its new interim director of bands following Juliet Boykins, Ph.D.
Martin, an ECSU alumnus, music educator, arranger and composer, has already made a mark on the university's music program. He most recently served as lecturer of music and assistant director of bands at ECSU, where he taught courses ranging from African Americans in Music, to Music Education Methods, advised undergraduate musicians, and led the Popular Music Ensemble.
Known for his collaborative leadership and student-centered approach, Martin worked closely with the director of bands on rehearsal planning, drill design and custom music arrangements. His efforts also extended to talent recruitment and service on multiple university committees.
Before his return to ECSU, Martin served three years as director of bands and guitar instructor at Warwick High School, where he developed comprehensive lesson plans, choreographed marching routines, and fostered student musicianship across diverse learning styles. His teaching roots trace back to Northeastern High School, where he honed skills in popular music arrangement and performance coordination.
Martin is also a nationally commissioned composer and arranger, having professional ensembles and student groups across the country perform his works. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from ECSU and a Master of Music in Music Education and is currently completing his Ph.D. in Music Education, with graduation anticipated for Aug. 2025. Martin is an active member of NAfME, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Martin blends scholarly rigor with creative vision to inspire the next generation of musicians. His appointment reflects ECSU's continued commitment to fostering musical excellence and supporting alumni leadership within its academic programs.
