Elizabeth City, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University’s (ECSU) Chancellor’s Scholarship Gala raised $277,600 as part of a week-long series of events celebrating the installation of Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove, Sr. The ECSU Foundation, which oversees private giving to advance student support, faculty initiatives and university operations, supported the scholarship gala.

Held at the close of installation week, the gala brought together alumni, community leaders, faculty and supporters with a shared purpose: to expand access to higher education for ECSU students. University officials said the funds raised will directly support scholarships, which will reduce financial barriers and increase opportunities for current and future Vikings.

The gala also served as a platform for a new initiative aimed at sustaining long-term support for students. During both his installation address and remarks at the gala, Hargrove announced an endowment challenge designed to increase access and opportunities for students.

Under the initiative, Hargrove will match, dollar for dollar, up to $1 million, any $25,000 commitment made to establish a new endowment or to contribute to an existing one. Gifts made since July 2025 to establish new endowments will also contribute to the challenge.

“This is about creating lasting pathways for our students,” Hargrove said. “When we invest in endowments, we are making a commitment that extends far beyond a single year. These investments ensure that generations of students can come to discover and leave to conquer.”

Vice Chancellor for University Advancement LaDaniel Gatling, II said the response to the gala reflects a growing momentum of support for the university’s mission. “The generosity we witnessed is a powerful reminder that our community believes in the promise of ECSU students,” Gatling said. “Every dollar raised represents an opportunity for a student to pursue their education with fewer obstacles and greater confidence.”

The gala marked the culmination of a week that highlighted ECSU’s history, leadership and vision for the future, drawing attendees from across the region to commemorate Hargrove’s installation as the eighth chancellor of ECSU.
