Elizabeth City State University will increase retention and graduation rates by implementing a comprehensive student success strategy that integrates rigorous academics, personalized support, and innovative real-world and global learning experiences that elevate student progress, completion, and graduate success.
By 2030, increase ECSU’s 4-year graduation rate to greater than 40% and 6-year graduation rate to greater 50%, while increasing first-to-second year retention from 76.9% to more than 85% as measured by IPEDS and institutional cohort data.
Aligned Strategies
- Implement structured degree pathways with milestone tracking
- Redesign and tier the advising system to provide proactive, data-informed, and need-based support
- Expand and evaluate first-year experience programs to increase academic and social integration
- Incentivize student engagement in co-curricular activities tied to retention outcomes.
By 2030, increase the percentage of first-year, fulltime students with a GPA above 2.5 from 56.1% to 75% as measured at the end of the academic year.
Aligned Strategies
- Expand use of early assessments and embedded academic skill development initiatives
- Scale access to targeted tutoring and academic recovery services (e.g., Summer Bridge, Success Courses).
By 2030, 90% of ECSU graduates will be employed, enrolled in graduate school, or enlisted in service within one year of graduation.

- Expand and track student participation in high-impact experiences (internships, apprenticeships, research)
- Provide robust career advising and graduate preparation through workshops, mentorship, and employer engagement
- Integrate experiential learning and alumni/employer partnerships into academic and co-curricular programs.
