The flight simulator lab consists of: one FRASCA Flight Simulator, two REDBIRD full-motion Flight Simulators, one Redbird X-Wind, and two Desktop Flight Simulators. A brief description and features of these Flight Training Devices (FTDs) is as follows.

The FTD is based on the Cessna 172R, and a Beech Duchess (BE-76) multi engine, equipped with a 170 degree screen, three projector, and textured color visual.

The Cessna 172R/BE-76 and have Level 6 Digitally Recorded Cessna 172R/BE-76 flight data.

The FTDs have a full IFR avionics “stack” as would be found in the aircraft being simulated. The actual/simulated avionics are as noted below:

  • 1 KMA 28 Audio/Intercom/Marker Beacon
  • 1 KX 155A NAV/COM with Glide Slope
  • 1 KX 155A NAV/COM without Glide slope
  • 1 Garmin 430 GPS
  • 1 MD41- 231 GPS/NAV Selector
  • 1 KT 76C Mode C Transponder

The Instructor’s Station (ISO) allows the operator of the FTD to control and monitor the operation of the FTD and the progress of the training. The operator is able to control the IOS functions with a mouse and a keyboard. The ISO includes the following software modules, Graphical Control module, Lesson Plan module, Jeppesen database for the entire US, snapshot module, fault and control pages, record and play/back module, map module, ATIS module, NIFA scoring module and plotting module.

The visual system realistically portrays various weather conditions to include Day/Dusk/Night, clouds, (tops, bottoms, ground scud) etc. The visual system portrays various runway and approach lighting systems as selected from the IOS. The Image Generator utilizes high-resolution, raster-based technology to create the realistic, fully textured airport scenes. Special effects such as landing light lobes and conflicting traffic are also included.

The Redbird MCX is a superior-quality, full motion, feature-rich Advanced Aviation Training Device equipped with dual yoke, dual rudder that is geared towards CFI/CFII, Crew Resource Management (CRM) and two pilot cockpit training. With standard features that are anything but standard such as wraparound visuals, a fully enclosed cockpit, quick-change configurations, scenario-based training compatibility and of course an electric motion platform, the MCX serves up a level of realism that is simply unavailable in other training devices on the market. Standard features include:

  • Electric Motion Platform
  • Dual yoke and rudder for simultaneous pilot and copilot control
  • 2-axis premium control loading yoke
  • Fully enclosed cockpit
  • +200° wrap-around visuals
  • User designed missions database
  • Unique pilot key system
  • Portable instructors panel software
  • Quick-change cockpit configurations
    • Single and multi-engine
    • Traditional and glass cockpit
  • Complete terrain and airport database
  • Operates on a standard 15 amp outlet
  • FAA approved AATD

The Redbird FMX is a superior-quality, full motion, feature-rich Advanced Aviation Training Device with features such as wrap-around visuals, a fully enclosed cockpit, quick-change configurations, scenario-based training compatibility and of course an electric motion platform, the FMX serves up a level of realism that is simply unavailable in other training devices on the market.

The FMX is reconfigurable, versatile enough to be used for Single or Multiengine training and can represent glass panel aircraft as well as traditional 6-pack configurations.

The standard features include:

  • Electric Motion Platform
  • Fully enclosed cockpit
  • +200° wrap-around visuals
  • Ergonomically correct design
  • User defined missions database
  • Unique pilot key system
  • Portable instructor’s panel software
  • Quick-change cockpit configurations
    • Single and Multi-engine
    • Traditional and glass cockpit
  • Complete terrain and airport database
  • Operates on a standard 15 amp outlet
  • FAA Certified AATD
Teaches pilots the proper techniques for landing in challenging crosswind conditions.
  • Single yoke
  • Standard rudder pedals with differential brakes
  • Throttle Quadrant - propeller and mixture as appropriate to aircraft being simulated

The Redbird TD is a table-mounted flight training device, designed with the ergonomics of flight in mind. Traditional “desktop” flight training devices sit on top of a table or desk, causing the pilot to reach up for the yoke and to look unrealistically high for the gauges. The TD’s unique mounting system allows it to be hung under the table, placing the yoke, switches, gauges and visuals in the correct and most realistic position for the pilot.

  • Complete terrain and airport database
  • Equipped with computer, monitor, instrument panel, keyboard and speakers
  • Ergonomically correct design
  • FAA approved BATD with optional rudder pedals
  • Failure Hotkeys

Avionics Lab

The Lab-Volt Radar Training System consists of three subsystems (Models 8096-1 to 8096-3). Subsystems 8096-1 to 8096-3 provide students with hands-on training in the principles and operation of analog and digital radar, as well as radar tracking systems.
  • Radar Training System Features:
  • Active, real-time radar system operating in a classroom laboratory
  • Low power, safe operation
  • Latest technology, e.g., microstrips, Surface Mounted Devices (SMD’s), Digital Signal Processing (DSP), and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)
  • Pulsed, continuous wave (CW) Doppler, and frequency-modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) modes of operation
  • A-scope display output
  • Plan Position Indicator (PPI) display on a computer monitor (on-screen PPI display) with fixed-intensity, intensity-modulated, color-modulated, and color coded (weather radar) display modes
  • Conventional PPI display capability (vector scan output)
  • Moving Target Indication (MTI) processor for fixed target echo cancellation and clutter rejection
  • Computer-based (i.e., on-screen) control of the radar's processing and display functions
  • Computer-based control of the clutter generation for the study of the MTI processor functions
  • High repeatability of hands-on manipulations ensured through computer-based control of the clutter generation and radar's key parameters
  • On-screen block diagrams of the pulsed radar and radar processor/display subsystem with hardware related (real signal) test points
  • Computer-based oscilloscope for time-domain observation and analysis of test point signals powerful, computer-based, data monitoring system for easy study of the first stage in the MTD processing (FFT Doppler filtering, thresholding, and alarm generation)
The Avotek Cockpit Instrumentation System is a complete, functional simulation of a standard aircraft cockpit. It includes standard gyro, pitot-static, and engine gauges found on most aircraft. It can be used for demonstration of the systems or for teaching instrument removal and replacement. The system is powered by 110V AC.
The Avotek Avionics System Trainer is designed to provide practical, hands-on instruction in aircraft electronics and avionics. The system includes a complete IFR avionics package. All components are fully functional and operational. A complete, computerized instructor’s panel enables the introduction of typical airframe system faults and enhances training on system troubleshooting.
